Developing Thinking Skills in Music

This new one-day course explores thinking skills in music. Through presentation, practical activities and discussion, delegates will address the kinds of thinking relevant to music and different ways of teaching thinking in music. The course will provide an overview of music-based cognitive acceleration approaches, generalist stand-alone thinking tools and methods of infusing thinking across the curriculum. Links between thinking skills and other initiatives - such as assessment for learning - will be made explicit. The course is designed for specialist music teachers (primary and secondary) and advisers.

Course aims

  • Explore how different theories of thinking can be applied to music

  • Show how lesson starters, structures and questions can promote higher-level thinking

  • Make links between thinking skills and assessment for learning

  • Encourage teachers to reflect on their current practice
