Sue Cottrell, BA Hons, PGCE, MBA

Sue is an education consultant with curriculum, assessment, teaching and learning expertise in primary and secondary. She has worked as Music and Performing Arts Officer with the Welsh Assembly Government and its predecessors (e.g. ACCAC) since 1992, and is responsible for advising the Assembly on music education from 3 to 19. Sue works closely with QCA, advisory associations and the Arts Council of Wales on current initiatives in music education including, for example, curriculum reviews, teacher assessment, GCSE and AS/A Level developments.

Sue is an Ofsted and Estyn trained team inspector, primary and secondary. She has delivered a wealth of courses on teaching and learning, including training on Government strategies such as Teaching and Learning in the Foundation Subjects. She also works as a consultant for the BBC and other television production companies.


Sue has written and produced several books and videos for teachers including Composing Demystified, Exemplification of Standards (1996), Optional Test and Task Materials and Exemplification of Standards (2000). She has published research for the London Arts Board in the British Journal of Music Education and worked as a visiting tutor on Primary BEd and PGCE courses at the University of Wales College, Newport. Prior to going freelance, Sue taught music and drama in three secondary schools, as class teacher and head of department.
